Torrey Pines Board

Built for L in Washington, DC.

This was a new design I was really excited about, using 4 different wood species to create a visual of the cliffs at Torrey Pines. I used a painting of the cliffs to help create simplified vectors for four shapes: the cliffs in the foreground (Walnut), the cliffs in the background (Cherry), the beach (Alder) and the water/sky (Maple). After gluing up some blanks of each kind of wood, I cut each vector out with the Shaper Origin. I tried to “paint with the grain” as much as possible so that the natural grain followed the contours of the cliffs, water, and sky. Everything fit together really nicely, but it was still a complicated glue up.
