Toy Chests

Built for T in San Francisco, S in Encinitas and, S in San Diego

I made these rolling toy boxes for three very special babies FOR Christmas. The sides are white oak with Rubio Monocoat Pure, and the front and backs are painted poplar. The bottoms are Baltic birch plywood with 2-inch clear castors (wheels). The front two wheels also have brakes.

I printed out the names and then used a combination of drill, jigsaw, router, and sandpaper to make templates on 1/4-inch plywood. Then I guided a router bit along the templates to cut out the real thing from the 3/4-inch poplar. I wish I had a CNC but it came out pretty good for doing it by hand. I did have a couple of mistakes including lopping off the points on the “N”’s and destroying the last “A”, but I was able to patch them up and paint over.

The bottom slides into dados on the sides, and the sides are held together with a combination of dominos and glue.
