“Redwood” Tree Shelf
Built for Savanna’s nursery
I saw this idea when searching around for nursery inspiration way back in the planning stages. After tracking down the source of a random photo I figured out it was built by a now defunct furniture company in Central Europe. So, I decided to build my own.
It’s built out of simple, Douglas Fir 2x6s straight from the pile at Home Depot. I used the planer and table saw to clean them up, and then started shaping pieces to get the tree structure. As usual, this “simple” project turned out to be more complicated than expected. The tapers in the branches were difficult since the wood pieces were taller than my table saw blade (so I had to create a jig and run them through twice). And all of the random angles made clamping an adventure. I made heavy use of my new domino jointer for every join. I used a French cleat to attach the “trunk” piece to the wall and 3 floating shelf brackets for the horizontal branch piece. Finished in Rubio Monocoat pure which came out just slightly redder than expected but now I’m embracing it as part of the plan all along, hence the name.
